Hey there, lovely readers!
If you're a new parent, a caregiver, or just someone curious about all things baby-related, you've probably heard about the dreaded nappy rash. If you haven’t; it’s a seriously annoying skin issue that affects up to 35% of infants, making their bottoms sore and inflamed.
But fear not! Today, we're diving into the world of baby skincare and exploring how tallow, an old-school remedy that's making a comeback, could be the solution to your baby's problems.
This natural wonder might just be the key to keeping your baby's bum happy and rash-free.
It’s been used for centuries as an emollient to protect delicate skin, and is totally pure, containing no additives or chemicals that can irritate sensitive skin.
So, grab a cup of tea, get comfy, and let's have a look at how to keep your baby’s skin healthy and rash-free.
Symptoms of Nappy Rash
Your baby's bottom and genital area may appear inflamed and sore.
For children with darker skin, this inflammation could look brown, purple, or grey, while for those with lighter skin, it often appears red.
Some patches of skin might be raised or swollen, and there may even be breaks in the skin, known as ulcers.
The folds of the skin are usually not affected because urine doesn't reach them. However, nappy rash can sometimes extend to your baby's tummy or spread up towards their back.
This rash can be uncomfortable and even painful, which might make your baby feel irritable.
Treating Nappy rash with Tallow
There are a few key things to do when treating Nappy rash:
Change your baby’s nappies regularly:
By changing your baby’s nappies frequently, you give their skin a chance to heal. Check your child’s nappy every hour or so. If their nappy is soiled, change it straight away.
Wash your baby’s skin:
Make sure to wash your baby’s skin after each nappy change. Most soaps are very drying to their skin so opt for some tallow soap as it will gently cleanse their sensitive skin.
Use tallow balm to protect their skin:
Tallow balm is thick enough to work as a barrier for rash prevention, and is very soothing as well. Apply some tallow balm every nappy change.
Ensure you apply it thickly enough to form a barrier that prevents wee and poo from touching the skin. You’ll know you’ve used enough if there's still a visible layer of cream at the next diaper change.
Not only will this balm act as a protective barrier, it is loaded with anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties as well as vitamins that will promote healing and repair your little one’s skin.
Airing out:
Give your baby’s bottom as much air time as possible each day. Let them play or nap without a diaper, placing a towel underneath them.
To improve air circulation and reduce friction, you can also loosely fasten their diaper or opt for a larger size.
Go for disposable diapers:
Disposable diapers are better at absorbing moisture. If you usually use cloth diapers, consider switching to disposables temporarily until the rash clears up. If you stick with cloth diapers, avoid using plastic over pants.
Jojoba Factor - The Cherry on Top
Let’s talk about our second favourite skincare ingredient: Jojoba oil.
Jojoba is a proven anti-inflammatory and has been shown to relieve irritation and repair damage.
I’ve already covered the benefits of Jojoba in a separate blog, but here’s a summary for you lazy readers out there😂
- Reduces skin inflammation
- Antibacterial properties
- Improves skin elasticity
- High vitamin E content
- Hypoallergenic (not likely to cause allergic reaction)
Jojoba + Tallow - The Dream Team
So, should you buy a jar of tallow or a bottle of jojoba oil?
Neither.
Both of these will take up way too much time to apply and will waste your money…
That’s why we’ve combined tallow and jojoba oil into a single product: Whipped Baby Balm.
2 ingredients, nothing else...
Ditch the harsh chemicals and keep your baby’s skincare simple😊

@Nikki, Hi there, Nino from Skincare Society here,
Our Whipped Baby Balm and our Original Balm contain 100% grass-fed tallow and organic jojoba oil. Nothing else😊
Hi there, please could you confirm the ingredient list for the Whipped Baby Balm and the Unscented Tallow Balm? I’m just wanting to know the difference for my baby and to check for preservatives, surfactants and other excipients. Many thanks!
